    Day #30/365 - Kris from LockedCog.com

KrisLC-5, originally uploaded by Jerome Love.

You may remember Kris from the January TrickCat, yeah he's the guy who put that on. When he's not breaking wheels, frames and cranks, he runs the fixed gear blog LockedCog.com.

    KrisLC-4

We've been meaning to get together and shoot some photos since and finally got around to doing it today. He tried to take me to Faces afterward and even told me he'd buy a burger at HotRod's but I rolled out beforehand. It was a pretty cool session, real laid back and I got introduced to this crazy new spot. Kris is a down-to-earth dude, who just really loves riding bikes. Definitely looking forward to some future shoots. More photos after the click. You can see all of my photos on Flickr.

    Photo 365 Day #27/365 - Ross

Day 27- Ross, originally uploaded by Jerome Love.

I had the most amazing afternoon with the coolest four and three-quarter year-old kid that I've ever met. His mom, Lorna, was an art teacher at my high-school and she took the last year off to spend with Ross. Ross was diagnosed with Autism two years ago, so Lorna decided to take some time off to work with him. For more about what she's doing and how you can get involved, check out www.miracleforross.com for the whole story. I got to sit down with Lorna and talk with her about the whole experience. I'm working on the video right now and I should have it up in the next few days. Oh, are you into bowling? February 21st, there's the amazing Bowling for Ross II Event at Strikes Bowling in Elk Grove, CA; between 12pm and 9pm 20% of all the proceeds go towards Ross' program. It will be a blast! More photos of our day after the click.

Day #26/365 - My Beloved Mamiya

Yes I know its been done before. The word says there's nothing new under the sun =D, but this one really came to me. I was just sitting at my computer and then got to enjoy a delicious oreo cookie. As I was walking back, Ben was sitting in a unusual spot (not at his computer) and then I saw it. I tried doing it with natural light at fist, but had to bust out the flash to get Ben to pop out on the waist-level finder.

Pretty straight forward lighting setup, can you figure it out? (Hint: Don't let the viewfinder fool you.)

I give in, it's just a flash about 5 ft away on the camera's left. That's it. Shot at about 1/100th sec at F/1.8 for the shallow depth of field.

I'm pretty stoked too, because in February, I'm shooting strictly film. More on that this weekend.

Coming Soon: Photo365 - Film February

    Day #31/365- The Start

I've decided to do something different this February for my 365 project. I'm going to shoot it entirely on film kind of. I'm going to spend the month of February shooting all of my daily photos with either my Mamiya 645, Canon AE-1 or possibly my Polaroid (if I can afford the film.)

But, Jerome, how are you going to get that film, shoot it, process it, print it, scan it, and upload it day by day?

The answer and more, after the click.

    I'm not.

    FilmVsDigital Mosaic

In fact, I'm still going to be shooting the entire month with my trusty Canon 5D. But, I'm going to shoot the exact same shot with either of my film choices. Before we go any further lets define that.

    By exact I mean:

    • Same ISO (Film Speed)

    • Same lighting (if applicable)

    • Same Aperture (with a stop)

    • Same Shutter Speed (within a stop)

The reason I'm allowing for a stop difference with aperture and shutter speed is because film can hold a tonal range of about 7 or 8 stops (well-process B&W) and the most a digital SLR can hold is about 6 stops of light. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, I'd suggest starting here.

I already know this project is going to be meticulous (why I picked the shortest month of the year) but that's one of the advantages of doing this. It's going to slow me down right before the busiest 3 months of my life and really force to me at least brush up on my film understanding and probably my understanding of using a camera in general. If you're keen on trying this shoot me an email , find me on facebook or folllow me on twitter , I'd love to hear about how you're tackling this and see your results.

So when are you going to process, print, scan, and upload your film?

The third week of February. I figure that I would at least have my first two weeks of film done by then and then can start sorting through it. Here's the coolest part. We're going to compare them side by side (as best as we can) and we're going to vote on it. This polling system is statistically flawed, pretty insignificant, and downright biased because a lot of my readers are into film and it's all coming from one photographer, but anywho I wanted you to get involved. Who knows where this will go.

    So get ready.

    Photo 365 #21/365 - Meghan on K St.

Day #21/365 - Meghan on K, originally uploaded by Jerome Love.

I technically cheated on this one but it was late at night and I was planning to use it for today :D. My friend Meghan has modeled for me before, last year and so we went out last night and did some stuff. She might get into modeling, but she said she "likes to eat" so we'll see how that works. She's heading over to London for London Fashion Week with her sister's blog BitchBuzz.com to explore that. I'm stoked!

So I just tweeted about needing a model for my 365 project, both Valerie ( who I shot yesterday ) and Meg replied, I shot Valerie earlier in the day and Meghan late last night.

It was super cold and wind was blowing everywhere, but we managed through it with Ben, my roomate as a VAL. Pretty simple setup for most of these, two lights, a handheld DIY Beautydish and snooted flash or umbrella on the other end. I'm going out again with her to rework these shots, but I really liked my choice and these other three.

I'm just looking at this one now from another monitor and it either needs to be color calibrated or my monitor at home needs some help, so ignore the color shift :(

    Day 21 Extra 2

    Day 19/365 - Laundry Day

Day 19/365 - Laundry Day, originally uploaded by Jerome Love.

I did laundry this morning at my favorite laundromat. Well it's one of like 3 I've been too, it's cheap, clean and has free drying. I was sitting there reading Sea Wolf, I paused and looked around and then this photo hit me in the face. I have to say 19 days ago I wouldn't have taken this. I'd see it and say, "dang it, I don't have my camera." These days, I can truly testify that the best camera is the one that's with you.

    Day 15/365 - Aperture?

Day 15/365 - Aperture?, originally uploaded by Jerome Love.

I went out yesterday with Emilia and spent a delightful day teaching her a bit about her camera. She's still not quite comfortable enough to adjust while the camera's at her eye.

It was a pretty low-key day, we spent some time in McKinley Park, watching the squirrels, geese and flowers.I figured it's a bit easier to learn about a camera and all its controls on a bunch of static objects instead of trying the patience of some person.

To my delight to picked it pretty quick and learned how to make some photos of her own. In this one she ran out of the coffee shop, a snapped a photo of the capitol just before dusk, pretty rad eh?

I can't wait to see her roll of film.

A few more of mine and shots of the day after the click.

Right as we were leaving, I brought out a flash and created a few of these. Super simple one-light handheld camera left, through a home-made diffuser. I love night portraits like these.

Day #14/365 - Ben and His Bike

Ben has been working on his bike for about 3 months all together. It started simply as that Univega frame and now it's a beautiful piece of art. I got home from work tonight at about 11:40 and thought about 10 minutes later, "Crap I have 10 minutes to make a photo." Leon is already a model so I thought I'd continue introducing you to my roommates.

Day 14 - Ben and his beloved bike

    Photo365 Day 12 - I'm not a Model

I'm not a Model, originally uploaded by Jerome Love.

but that's just how trying this project is. I was walking out to go read and decided that I should actually pull out my DSLR and make a photo. This isn't great by any means but that's why this project exists. To stretch, to learn, to make mistakes and do it all over again.

The tech stuff. I lit this photo using the light on the wall behind me provided kindly by the apartment complex and a Nikon SB-28 thru a DIY Beauty Dish at 1/2 Power, about 7 Ft. away, camera left. Same for the right photo, except light is on the right.

I create these, originally uploaded by Jerome Love.

Instead of creating photographs that are more interesting. Photographs with more than phone. I can't complain though, this pays the bills, behind the stack, there is actually interesting social work that I do, but this is just the tedious, mind-numbing part I do.

The hardest part of this project is realizing how limited you are at times. I struggle as a photographer when I have to move out of my comfort zone of my 5D and 24-70. Oddly enough, I've used my camera on my Motorola Droid for the last three days. What I've discovered is that truly the best camera is the one that's with you. I'm grateful.

I went to a poetry jam tonight and it was pretty rad. I can't complain at all. Video after the click.
