Day #179/365 - Nikki

Day #179/365 - Nikki, originally uploaded by Jerome Love.

This was one of those days. I had four simple things to do after waking up and that was it. I thought I had it all under control but mannnn no fun.

    1) Drive to Elk Grove, pick up mail
    2) Print out wedding pricing guides and information for clients
    3) Meet with clients
    4) Shoot

I got to one and it all fell apart.

I got to my parents place and pickup a package I've been waiting for as well as my sample albums. One thing you never account for when you first move out is how long it actually takes to pick something up from you parents. You don't live with them anymore, so it's like a family visit and you catch up! Anyhow I spent 30 more minutes than I needed to there.

Home by 3:45, meeting at 6, shoot at 7. I sit down at my computer to find that my wedding pricing handout had been on an old hard disk that decided to die on me earlier this year. Time to design a new one. Two hours later I'm at Fedex getting it printed.

I show up 5 minutes late to my meeting but had a great time and am so excited to work with this couple as they begin their life together, more details on that as they come.

I lost track of time and ended up at my house at 7pm, Nikki was understanding but we ended up sitting in my living room, her, her friend and I brainstorming what the heck we were going to shoot.

This is my point, I had set this time aside to do this (6:30 - 7:00) but had found myself a bit late and clueless. There's an important aspect of being creative and that's setting aside enough of that quiet time to give your brain a break from the hustle and bustle of the day.

Long story short, we drove around a bit, found this rad shot and the shoot rocked.

    el fin.

    Day #177/365 - Warped Tour

    Day#177/365 - Warped Tour

I had a the privilege of shooting all access at Mountain View, CA Vans Warped Tour Saturday all thanks to my buddy Nick. THANK YOU!

Meet Caleb Shomo, new lead singer of Attack!Attack! I remember first hearing about these guys because my old roommates showed me their music video for a laugh and called it CrabCore. I laughed. Now I'm not, these dudes are superstars and put on one hell of a show. I saw and photographed : Whitechapel, Motion City Soundtrack, The Rocket Summer, Set Your Goals, Artist Vs Poet and the Casualties and it rocked! But for some reason this photo stuck. I mean in all honesty this guy is just having fun. Isn't that what it's all about?

Day #175/365 - Pine Needles (Sabbatical)

I camped (well stayed in a cabin) this past week up near Truckee, CA at Sky Mountain. I used to go here for a week long summer camp. A lot of my good friends are still a part of it, so I came and hung out. I had most of the time to myself, which is really why I wanted to be out there. I did snap a few shots of the campers here and there.

I had such a good time just relaxing, reading, having no set schedule. Just giving myself sometime to think without having to think about how much time I have to think (confusing eh?) I feel this first half of the year has been been a mixed bag. I've grown in so many areas (photographically, musically) but still lack so much in others (spiritually, personally). I feel like this photo brought a nice balance, I could actually sit and acknowledge the simple things in life like holding a handful of pine needles.

    Day #174.5/365 - Redemption (Sabbatical)

The theme of the camp this year was the great reversal. Redemption is the great reversal. Where do you see redemption in your life?

Day #174/365 - Here not there

I needed a sabbatical this past week, and thus why I've been absent. Just to get away, clear my head, refocus myself. I think I might do this more regularly, at certain points throughout the year. It's about halfway through 2010, so it's nice to sit back and reflect. What about you?

Day #172/365 - Summer Time is Here

I felt really liberated today. Father's day has always been a rough holiday for me, but I think that's what did it. I realized that I overthink a lot of things, my life especially.

I always want to make the right decision that will get me to my next big step, but I always forget diligence in the interval or half step in between. This happens, I get frustrated, bothered, moody and eventually mad at myself because I'm not where I thought I should be. It's a cycle.

Well I'm breaking that cycle, today for the first time (that I'm aware of) I feel like I can. I'm liberated. I'm alive. I can thrive.

This photo for me represents that. Freedom in the streets, open roads, green lights and the rest is a blur, the only thing I can focus on is the next step (or crank turn in this case). I'm stoked.

    Day #167/365 - Hoop Dreams

Day #167/365 - Hoop Dreams, originally uploaded by Jerome Love.

DISCLAIMER: If you're looking for something to go along with this photo, the words below have really nothing to do with it. I'd read it thought.

I'm in a rut, funk, ditch, hole, etc. I really don't know what it is. If I'm honest with myself, I think it has a lot to do with this statement. I chatted with my friend Paul last Sunday and he said this to me.

Paul : How are you doing man?

Me : Honestly, I'm feeling pretty weird lately. Just funked up. I don't what it is.

P: It happens. You know i was thinking something the other day as I was driving.

    Me: Yeah?

P: You know, to get where we are (or where we want to be) we constantly have to make the right decision. One after another, everyday. It's a battle, a struggle. The worst part is that one bad decision, a single horrible idea, one little thing, can discredit all the good you've done. All of those decisions, they're done for, wiped clean. Just because of one bad one.

    Me: Yeah?

    P: Yeah.

Me: Man, you have no idea how relevant that is to me right now. Why couldn't we have had this conversation a two weeks ago? A week ago? Four days ago?

P: (Laughs) Well I'm glad I encouraged you now.

While I don't believe that a single small mistake may change the course of your life forever, I do believe that character mistakes can do so. We're human, we make mistakes all the time. We forget to buy milk when we're at the store, we forget to do some homework, we said something we didn't mean, we did something we shouldn't have done. Those things happen on a daily basis, I get that.

But the things you really have to watch out for are character mistakes. How often do you mistake your character? How often do you walk away from something and wonder, "Why did I even think about doing that?" How often have you asked yourself afterward, " Who am I?"

That's the thing, I don't think we're designed for questions like that after actions. I think our actions should be defined by questions like that and not vice versa. If you've never had any of those questions ( I highly doubt it) then thanks for stopping by. If you have, I'm right there with you. It just seems to be happening more than naught lately.

I'm nineteen (nearly twenty!) and I'm at a point in my life where these questions come up everyday, every hour, I'd say every minute some days. They should though, I think you (and close friends) should constantly keep yourself in check with your character, your goals, your "you."

But these questions should define your actions, your decisions, your "you". These past few weeks, they haven't. If that's you, I feel you.

Day #157/365 - Alyssa, originally uploaded by Jerome Love.

I met Alyssa through a friend and we've ran into each a few times here and there and today happened to be one of those days.

This shoot was so awkward for me, because we were at a bbq and there were all these people around. I don't know why, but I just felt rushed, totally some mental thing going on. Anyhow, I liked the result.

Day #155/365 - Glass and Toms, not Bombs.

This is my new friend Chelsea Glass. She's awesome as far as I know and is applying to be an intern for TOMS Shoes this summer! She threw an event yesterday here in Sacramento to help raise awareness for the 40% of the world that lives everyday without shoes. Look for her on facebook and help her out!

Day 154/365 - Chris Sees and Hears in Bokeh

You get a two-for-one today, since I've been lagging so hard on this project. I swear I still use dial-up when it comes to life.

Truly this project has been soo tough on me, but I made it easier today. I just finally took my camera with me everywhere I went today. On my bike ride, while I was hanging out, and when I went to pizza. By posting, I had a few photos to choose from and no stress. You'd think I had this figured out by now.

Chris sold me a Puch Magnum moped and has been helping me get parts to put it together. I'm pretty stoked on it.

    Things I Like Thursdays

Continuing this tradition. I found a lot of things this week, while perusing the web. I also recently started a book club, summer school starts next week and life goes crazy yet again.

    Via ME.

The Moviegoer by Walker Percy is the book we're reading for our book club. Apparently it's one of the best 100 novels of all time. I'll let you know once I'm finished. The second book is for my Intro to World Religions Class that I'm taking this summer. Nothing astounding in this book yet. More photos and ramblings after the click.

I remember doing a project similar to this in my first (second to last) photo class in high school. I think it was called, "I fall to pieces" I like this one better.

On the topic of books, here's a book cover I found. I'm no graphic designer but I found it pleasing to the eye. I've added a few tattoos to my body in the earlier part of this year so I'm a fan of the title as well.

I love skateboarding. I wish I did it enough these days that my skate shoes looked more like this. Every skater (except Casey) loves to see a pair of his own this beatup at some point. They fit perfect. They feel the board perfectly. The grip like crap. But they got soul, baby... soul.

Lastly, who doesn't love a little Wes Anderson, you may not like this one (it's a little slow, Royal Tenenbaums is my favorite), but he puts out great dark comedy.

All of the above VIA FFFFOUND!

To wrap things up for now, sit down with my favorite editorial photographer John Keatley and hear his story about why he photographs. If you're a photographer, a creative professional or have some type of aspiration other than your day job, this one's worth the thirty minutes.

    TT: Jeremy Cowart

I think this is really good advice for anyone who photgraphs.

@jeremycowart: I think it's healthy, as a photographer, to be in front of the camera every now and then so you can understand just how awkward it is.

Day #151/365 - Lackluster to say the least

    Done with the semester... check.
    Moved... check.
    Working.check.
    Photography... check.
    Creativity....what?
    Inspiration...huh?

I'm feeling lackluster to to say the least. I don't know what it is. I feel like all my creative braincells have gone postal (if I had any to begin with.) I don't get it.

I'm searching anywhere and everywhere. I opened my window last night.

I want to hear this city speak. I need to feel it breathe.

Not there yet. I click for hours, perusing the offerings of cyberspace. I see old friends, I meet new ones, I live with the same ones. A spark or two maybe.

I take a spin, maybe go for a ride. I'm reading this and studying that. Where is it? What is it?

I really don't know. Are we GETTING it? Am I there yet?

    Excuse my ramblings.
