    From the Crucible : Days #87, 88/365 - Iowa

I had a night to relax, so I thought I'd put my feet up and write a little.

    Earl and Dale

Ahh that's better. So I'm now calling this trip the crucible. I prefer that you think associate that word positively in connotative light(thanks Mrs. Maxon, 12th grade AP english). I feel like this trip has already made me a better photographer, student and just overall person. Photographically, I'm "forced" to shoot day-in, day-out. Mostly the same subjects and I'm expected to bring a fresh light every time.

Do I always succeed? Of course not. But that's the point, I can see where I failed, and look for new ways to improve. You don't really get that opportunity everyday, so I'm excited.

The two days we were in Iowa were pretty cool. The crowd was excited and the venues were surprisingly well lit.

    Day #87/365 - Ottumwa, Iowa

The story continues after the click.

Day #88/365 - Mt. Pleasant, Iowa

I also get to meet great people in great places that I had no idea existed outside of Hollywood.
    Enter Frank.

    Texas Frank

We met Frank W. in Dalworth, Texas on a gas stop. I think he works/owns the local Subway sandwich shop. Frank caught my attention with a simple question, "The real question is whether you shoot Nikon or Canon?" I laughed and replied, "Nikon, hahaha no I only shoot the best, so it has to be a Canon. I shoot with Nikon flashes though." He laughed and we chatted for a bit. We explained what we were doing and where we were headed. Frank even picked up a CD from Adam Cappa

    Texas Frank and Adam

The moral of the story is that this tour is exposing me to towns and people whom I may have never had the chance to run into. I can take photos in places that few people know about and even fewer have visited. So what are YOU doing to get out of your comfort zone?

    Updates from the Road

Two weeks into the Sound and Lights! Tour and I'm exhausted. We started in Sacramento in a 15 passenger van and I'm currently writing from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

It's been quite the journey. We finally met up with our RV/Bus in Las Vegas which finally gave us some room to stretch our legs.

These two weeks have been great so far. I've been blessed with nine other amazing people to live, learn and love with. I'll be honest. I had no idea how this was going to pan out. Well lets rewind for a minute and I'll tell you how I go into this situation.

At the end of last year, I photographed the LOVEMERCY convention in Denver, CO. Steven Cooper was one of the performing artists at the event. Towards the end of the event, he and his manager commented on my work and told me about this tour they were planning the spring. Three months, ten people, 52 cities and one bus. Free food and travel...? Hmm I think I'm in.

Ten people including the 2 and 1/2 year old Ezekiel.

As a student this trip is a nightmare. I'm taking twelve units online and there isn't a constant source of the World Wide Web outside of tethering (don't tell Verizon) my phone. So far I'm alive and I've made it to midterms. In fact, I'm writing this to avoid studying for my accounting midterm.

As a photographer this trip is a nightmare blessing crucible. I get to photograph three Christ-centered artists for six weeks. Photographing the same three acts five days a week on average can definitely make you want to put a drill in your ears, no matter how good they are. Forgive me Thom Yorke, but yes even you and Radiohead would get old after six weeks straight.

Photographing the same three acts five days a week on average will definitely make you a better photographer. You quickly learn that your bag of tricks only goes so far and runs so deep, and my bag is looking like a desert stream in the summertime. So what do I do to pass the time? I keep photographing, maybe I restrict myself to one lens, or one style. One huge source of inspiration has been Todd Owyoung , this dudes like the Buddha (no pun) of concert photography.

So we totally got handed over in Glendale, AZ. The club manager waited until we were 10 minutes away to tell us that he was out of booze since St. Patty's Day and moved the show to this other bar JugHeads. We showed up but no one else did. But this bartender was awesome, he was totally chill.

Wow. That's all I have to say about the show last night. It was sooooo gooooddddd. I had heard NiceNice online but seeing them live was a whole new experience.

Sister Crayon closed the show with two new ones that I had heard parts of in the studio, but put together... wow.

This shot is my favorite of the night.

Day #62/365 - "You wanna chilld hella hard?"

Day #62/365 - Anthony, originally uploaded by Jerome Love.

Anthony's one of those guys you can't but help laugh with. We've come a long way and Anthony's a rad dude. He works at Macy's, macks on honeys and moms who introduce themselves as, "I want to look like my daughter." in the juniors section.

If you haven't heard, Anthony will tell you straight out, " I wanna be famous." He doesn't know what for, but he's pursuing that.

We were chilling today at my friend Lucas' place and I saw the window with a bunch of rain on the glass, some good light and thought I should make a photo.

Anthony, " You wanna chill hella hard?" (laughing)

Me, " I want to make a picture of you."

There's also an alternate on my Flickr.

    Hahaha. Good times.

    Day #58/365- The Pancake Circus

So I finally did it. I went to Pancake Circus. For almost twenty years of my life I have feared this place. It looks so shady and odd.

You can locate it right off of broadway. It's pretty hard to miss.

Just to give you some context, one Yelper said,

"This place is so old looking and when you walk in its full of creepy clowns from like the 70s haha Such an odd place.

I went here for breakfast with my friend and it was pretty good. She had the strawberry pancakes which were COVERED in whip cream and then gave her a tummy ache haha but before the hurt she said they were delish! "

Anyhow I dove in and loved it.
