I spent all of my Friday driving from cannabis dispensary to cannabis dispensary photographing the owners and the nature of their business. I was surprised, I thought most of these places would have two huge guys with shotguns and a pitbull that kills on command. As you can see, the biggest gun I saw was this double-barrel nerf.
The photos were shot for an upcoming cover story in Sac News & Review . Look for it this Thursday.
Monet is the biggest Smashing Pumpkins fan ever. All of those tattoos are dedicated to the band. I had a wonderful time shooting her for an upcoming story in SNR. Be sure to check out 15 minutes this week!
I got to sit down Monday evening with four incredible people that I needed to photograph for Sac News & Review .
It's all centered on a very popular drink.
More photos after the click.
Garrett Pierce (yes that Garrett Pierce.), Hugh Weller, Sandford Wratt and Michele Hebert are all members of the growing wine community in Sacramento and these guys are on top of their game. Check out the story this thursday.
Yes I know I've been MIA lately, just tons of school, work and travel. The month of August was a busy one, and an especially memorable one. My friend's Ben and Rose got married and I've finally finished editing all of they're wonderful photos. Here's my favorite:
I lagged on this but here are some photos of Set Your Goals and Suicide Silence. Halfway through Set Your Goals' set, I just set my camera down and acted like I was sixteen again. More after the click.
Joe is such a rad dude. I got to chat with him backstage before the show.
Suicide Silence brought some metal. I only snapped two because I caught the tail end of their set.
One more set of photos coming from Whitechapel tomorrow. Stay tuned.
Some of Caseys (pictured) friends came up from San Jose earlier this week to skate a bit. All kinds of fun and pain. I made the mistake of leaving my camera at home for the first day, and some gnarly stuff went down, check out Justin's Blog for the edit in the near future. Photos of when I learned my lesson after the click.
Just wanted to thank all of you who are reading this blog. Since April, we've doubled the amount of pageviews and visitors. I appreciate all your support!

So BFF kicked off this weekend in Sacramento. Pretty stoked on it. I showed up late so I only have a few photos of the actual event and more photos of the after-party at Brad's.
From what I caught of the festival at 10pm, it was amazing all day. People were out in mass all way till the end so who knows what it was like during the peak. Photos and more after the click.
I only saw the tail end of NYC messenger video that made me feel invincible on my bike when thrashing through traffic and then the premiere of "Macramento" which is Macaframa's take on cycling in Sacramento. Featuring Cardiel, Squirrel, Kris, Brad and a few other Sacramento riders.
(I love focusing in the dark) =^D.
I won't give you any spoilers but I will say there was some dirt jumping going on and maybe Cardiel threw out some bangers.
Hands down, this 365 project is kicking my butt. I really need to get back into things. So here is my attempt at regularly updating it. I snapped this before I walked into work.
As the weather gets warmer here in Sacramento, Second Saturday gets more and more popular. Whether or not that's a good thing, is up for discussion but I had some fun. We just walked around, went and saw my buddy Jeremy's band over at Jack's and some art at a few of the local galleries.
The day started with Casey claiming the Suns would take the finals this year. We'll see.
We then went out on the town.
On our way home, we met our buddy Kris at Beach Hut Deli and in about 5 minutes a fight unfolded before our eyes. It was pretty funny, I'm not sure how it happened exactly but the guy in all black got rocked by a guy who was 5 foot 6 and maybe 130 pounds.
So I was doing an interview yesterday with the college newspaper, and during this awesome interview, someone told me I should write more. So here goes nothing.
As most of you know, I was on a music tour (some of you may still think I am on it) with three bands across the U.S. It ended abruptly last week and now I'm back home in the wonderful state of California.
Why did it end? Well long story short, there as a bit of a fallout between bands (well the bands and one other artist.) One band left and the tour was called. I'm now home.
I had a great time, it's incredible to travel on a bus (I've always been a frequent flyer myself), you see things that i never thought existed outside of Hollywood. Towns that have no stop lights, places in the middle of nowhere where gas is $5 a gallon. It's crazy.
Photographing three groups, at unpredictable venues over and over again makes you crazy. But it also makes you better. The best part of these experiences is that I got to know most of these people pretty well. We talked about our hopes, our dreams, our despairs, our fears, our families, our loves, our passions. We talked about our favorite music, we discussed theology, what love means in a Christian context, what it means to live this crazy life in a crazy world. I will forever remember these times as a crucible for my development not only as a photographer but as a real, living breathing person.
I figured I'll slow play out all of these photos and do some writing in between to give you guys the backdrop. The first person I want you to meet is Adam Cappa . For various reasons that shouldn't be shared, Adam got me home. He actually pulled out his credit card and payed United Airlines $230.47 to fly me home because someone else wouldn't do it. That's irrelevant though when you get to know Adam. That's just something he does without a thought.
I got to photograph Adam in a setting other than the stage, which was pretty refreshing. He's a good-looking guy, that is really easy to work with. The photographs are secondary in this situation. They're here just to keep you reading.
I had a conversation with Adam on one of these long drives. Adam's a straight-shooter, he grew up in a small(er) town of Richmond, Indiana. His dad's the sheriff there, his brother's a police officer, his sister is a student and I'm not exactly sure what his mother does besides make incredible spaghetti and meatballs. My much-avoided point is that if you ask Adam a question he'll give you a straight answer. I think it has something to do with the way he was raised and his faith.
Anywho, the conversation started somewhere along the lines of, "what do you hope to do in this lifetime?" Its one of those ridiculous questions that humans center great discussions on but really hold no weight until that person has accomplished what they stated. Maybe I'm disenchanted.
Adam stated what I expected, he wants to communicate the love of Christ to people all over through his music. I hummed along and kind of shot the same thing back at him but insert my current passion instead of music. Adam's kinda successful at what he does. You may not have heard of him yet, but actually Adam's really successful at what he does. You may have heard the name Jeremy Camp and hopefully I'm not letting any cats out of the bag, but Adam's been working pretty closely with that guy. So I asked him another question,
"How do you filter out your wordly desires (fame, fortune, etc.) and find your purpose? Like what makes you do what you do? Moreover, how do you know this is what you're supposed to do?"
His reply blew my previous statement above: "Its one of those ridiculous questions that humans center great discussions on but really hold no weight until that person has accomplished what they stated. Maybe I'm disenchanted. up.
(This isn't verbatim, simply what I can remember off the top of my head.) "Well, I think where I'm at has kind of showed me that I am where I am supposed to be but if that all changes I have to be content with that. I believe my gift is communicating with people. The guitar and voice are simply complimentary. If I lost my arm tomorrow and became mute the next, I still believe that I would continue communicating God's love in some way. All that other stuff is secondary."
I have to say I'm impressed. Not an answer I expected, but definitely one I'm going to look at as guidance.
But are we getting it yet? Are we? I know I'm not there but I'm trying after this conversation. What if your "gift" is really just complimentary? I don't write this to scare you but more so to invoke a reality check. Could you be missing out on your real purpose because your so focused on presumed purpose?
I think of it and it scares me to death. Maybe not now, but what if in ten years I realize this? What if I never realize it? I really don't know.
Friends, I offer you comfort though. The God that I know, isn't a God that creates you with passions and desires, talents and dreams; drives them into your heart so much that you believe in them, you live them, you breathe them, you even bleed them only to rip them away. God creates you in these ways to live them out, but for his purpose and like you, I'm still searching and working that out.
Wow what an amazing 12 hours! The USA beat Spain 2-0 to make it to the FIFA Confed Cup Finals and yours truly was featured on Strobist.com for a portrait I created here in South Africa!
I've spent a few Thursdays working with the HIV/AIDS Support Group hanging out with them and getting to know them. This group will be the start of a new VoxThreads initiative in Kliptown.
I snapped this portrait of Thulani, the director of the Kliptown Youth Program, last time I was there.
More of the story and links when you read more
I liked the portrait so much that I decided to submit for Strobist Boot Camp II : First Assignment. Strobist is a lighting blog by former photojournalist David Hobby, which focuses primarily on small, flash-based photography. It's grown a Flickr Group of over 50,000 members and gets about 1/4 million hits a day (more now) and over a million hits a month!
You are in! (Someone will be picking up the balance of your trip, depending on how much you receive)
Attached you you will find some information (power point present) concerning your health in Mozambique. I will be sending more in a couple of days. Also, Dr. Tamburello will deliver your malaria medication to you. If you have any questions, let me know.
Thanks! Mike
Praise God! I want to thank all of you that prayed and/or donated to make this happen. I'll be leaving July 5th (my birthday by the way woohoo 19!) For about ten days! THANK YOU!
It is amazing that from another continent I can tune into a virtual tradeshow, interacting with vendors, photo professionals and service providers in real time.
Take a look.
When I logged in, I found the plaza. How awesome is this?
From there I could go over to the trade room floor.
